The Maji Bucket: Designing for a Global Crisis
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, our Ghana team at Project Maji developed the "Maji Bucket", a low-cost, foot-operated handwashing station designed to curb the spread of bacteria in rural Sub-Saharan Africa. Recognising that traditional handwashing stations often involve high-touch points, the team engineered a pedal-operated tap made from locally sourced materials like upcycled bicycle parts. The innovation provided a touchless, cost-efficient hygiene solution for communities without access to running water, ultimately reaching over 75,000 people and creating local jobs for people of determination who assisted in assembling the units.

My Contribution
I led the branding and visual identity, turning this low-tech, locally sourced innovation into a professional, scalable brand. I created the assets for social media, fundraising (#Sweat4Soap), videos, and post-impact presentations ensuring the design reflected both its simplicity and its life-saving impact.
The Maji Bucket was selected as part of Expo 2020 Dubai’s Global Best Practice Programme from hundreds of worldwide submissions. This prestigious selection showcased the project as a premier solution for the UN Sustainable Development Goal of "Clean Water and Sanitation".
The project successfully demonstrated a sustainable model for hygiene intervention, contributing to Project Maji's broader goal of serving one million people with clean water.
